Yikes!

We hadn't been up to the allotment for a few weeks and as there's hardly been any rain for over a month I was expecting everything to be shrivelled and sad.
Instead of wilted plants and dead seedlings we were met by spinach beet trees and an overgrown plot!

Allotment May 2011

The spinach beet survived the winter and the recent warm weather has sent it berserk. We spent most of the morning digging up the old plants, harvesting the leaves and clearing space for new seeds. As you can see the spinach beet is taller than the Jerusalem Artichokes. We replanted a few of last years tubers and swapped some with someone else on the site for some borage. I don't know what to do with borage...yet...

Our neighbour hasn't been the most attentive plot holder and has given up his strip so lots of the weeds on his site have spread to ours. Next time we're up we will clear some of it to keep the weeds at bay. We might also take his home made crucifix down.

As well as the spinach beet we harvested lots of lettuce leaves, carrots and chard and sowed some broad beans, runner beans and mange tout. The plot is loads clearer now so next weekend we'll crack on with more sowing and hopefully less weeding.
